The name Reston is derived from the initials of a man who envisioned a new type of suburban community.  Robert E. Simon took a piece of land in Fairfax County and saw the possibility of that land becoming a self-sustaining suburban area where people could both work and live. The planned community that has emerged, though almost 50 years in the making, was once the off-beat idea of an innovative planner and now sets the standard for Town Center Communities.

John Clark from Planning Magazine wrote about Reston’s evolution, from its beginnings as a simple idea to its construction and reality as a suburban-downtown destination.  Follow along for a fascinating account of how this town came to be: Reston Revisited PLANNING MAGAZINE 2011
