My husband and I decided on Tuesday February 24th 2009 that we were going to get married on that Thursday. I called the officiant and we decided on the place and only one place came to mind and that was Reston Town Center. It is where it all began…our nights sitting by the fountain or when he proposed at Clydes in Reston and now we would be making our vows to each other in front of the beautiful fountain with our close friends and family. Reston Town Center will always be a part of our history together. Clydes is like our family also, we share every major event in our lives with them.

We also are celebrating our 20th Anniversary and were the first band to ever perform at the Reston Town Center. This was prior to the completion of the structure over the skating rink. Since then we have performed all over the mid atlantic region including the Herndon, Cherry and Apple Blossom Festival! Our three Cds have been sold all over the world. We are still based right here in Reston !!!!!

My father moved into the Oak Park condos across from the Reston Town Center in 1992. He was aware of all the buildings that would be built and called the Reston Town Center, “Little New York.” He was in his late seventies and would drive around anyone new to the area and point out the hot spots. Never mind that he was a terrible driver and would turn the car in the direction he was pointing and he would go over a curb- right in front of the Town Center movie theater! He also loved to go and sit by the fountain with his best friend, Vince and play chess or checkers. I love that I could always find him there during the day and many nights watching the outdoor concerts and eating Uno’s pizza. Sometimes you could find him on cold days at the Hyatt bar making friends. My favorite memory was when he was in his eighties. He would tell me about hanging out at the Clydes bar and making friends. He said that the young men would be amazed by his stories of being a Radio Waist Gunner in a B26 airplane in World War II. He laughed, because they would hang on his every word and then the women would come over. They wanted some of the attention and my Dad was getting in their way! My Dad had some great stories, so soon the women were just as interested as the men. My father would tell me this and I would feel that he was exaggerating and would also feel a twinge of embarrassment. One day though, I walked into Clydes on a Saturday evening and who was there, but my father! He was surrounded by young men and women at the bar and he was “holding court.” I was enchanted and proud. I quietly slipped away, so not to disturb the fun. My father has now passed, but I carry with me these memories of the Reston Town Center. Some days, I forget he is gone and I look for him by the fountain or at the Hyatt or at Clydes. It is such a shame when I realize, I can no longer find him enjoying his, “Little New York”.

My now husband and I lived right across the street in the Oak something condos until 2004 and we spent lots of time at the Reston Town Center. We would get an Unos pizza and eat it on the wall by the fountain. We would go to McCormick and Schmitt to get oysters and beer for dinner. I took the bus to the metro and the bus stop was right at the bottom of the road where now condos and apartments are. It even looks so different now.

Long, long before the days of big office buildings, condominiums, and the upscale restaurants, there was a little town center which consisted of nothing more than a few shops and a movie theater. This little movie theater brought nights upon nights of endless entertainment to a little girl and her family. One of the best movie memories was seeing “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” on the big screen and her Mommy and Daddy (always) ordering “popcorn with layered butter.” As this little girl got older and progressed in life, so did RTC. A fountain was built, and at the rebellious young age of 14, this little girl and her friends would go fountain jumping and get chased out of the town center by town center security. Then an ice skating rink was built, and the shy innocent little girl (now 15 years old) was brought on her first date with a boy she had a crush on for 3 years. She was too shy to go alone, so she brought a friend (the dreaded third wheel) and the three of them skated the night away then spent three glorious hours in the infamous Reston movie theater watching Titanic. A year later, and along came prom. A little more outgoing and not so scared of boys, this young woman was brought to Clydes for her first big prom dance dinner. Nothing was more fun than walking around the town center in her sparkly gown with her cute boyfriend by her side.
Sadly, like all little girls must do, this little girl grew up and went off to college. She missed her family and their weekend dinner/movie outings very much while she was gone, so it was no surprise that when she graduated college in 2004 she not only wanted to live around RTC but she wanted to WORK in the new shiny Accenture building that was built while she was gone.
The year is now 2010, and although this little girl is all grown up, she still comes to RTC a few times a month to relive her youth. For Halloween, she went to the new American Tap Room to dance the night away with her sister and parents. She took her little doggy to the animal festival in the Fall of 2009. She took her new husband ice skating, for THEIR first ice skating date, last weekend. She even spent this past new years at the good old movie theater with her parents to see “It’s Complicated,” and as expected, her Mommy and Daddy ordered “popcorn layered with butter.” This little girl is now 28 years old, and as you can see, not much has changed. Just like her childhood, Reston Town Center still brings her family together and continues to mold some of her best memories.
So, thank you Reston Town Center, for making MY past 20 years so memorable and wonderful! I can honestly say that when I met my husband, one of the first places I brought him was Reston Town Center and spoke these simple words…”Welcome to my childhood..”

My husband and I were celebrating our engagement 4 1/2 years ago at Clydes at the town center. It was an incredibly memorable experience when we tolf the manager why we were there. He said, well today is your lucky day; he bought us each a fun drink in honor of the occasion. I think that was my first Pink Cadilac. We took pics next to the fountain afterwards…still on our refrigerator now. Truly a night to remember!

We moved to Oakton in 1988. We were so grateful when the Reston Town Center was built…a great place to take four little kids, all the visiting friends and relatives. By the early 1990s, Randa Mendenhall invited me to serve on the Reston Town Center Holiday Parade committee. As Aunt Chris was chair of the volunteers for five years, my large extended family enjoyed Thanksgiving Dinner at our home…and all showed up again on Friday morning to drive the cars, wear the costumes, man the check in table, hand out programs, etc… Last August we added a very special memory: our future son-in-law asked for our daughter’s hand in marriage at Il Fornaio.
As the twentieth anniversary year draws to a close with the upcoming parade, I am delighted that the nonprofit I now direct will proudly participate…with Verdia Haywood, Fairfax’s Architect of Social Services …proudly leading our group, in the very sharp yellow Thunderbird of our board chair, Dr. Mike Behrmann of George Mason University. It’s all about community…thank you Reston Town Center for fostering that sense of place, for providing a welcoming place for all!

I have so many wonderful memories from my experiences at Reston Town Center over the last twenty years that I don’t think I can nail it down to one favorite memory. Reston Town Center has always been the place to go when family, friends and business associates want to meet to enjoy a wonderful day or evening filled with great food, a sense of community, and a beautiful and safe setting. The mix of retail stores, restaurants and businesses provides a variety of options and the unique culture sets Reston Town Center apart from anything else in the area. Reston Town Center is one of Northern Virginia’s gems, and it continues to get better over time.

My fondest memory of the town center is my settlement date for my condo that I own in the market street condos. It is my first home, and my father came to help me move in when I bought the place. At the time his health was failing and we weren’t sure how much time he had left, but he came and he helped move, I could tell he wanted to be there and he seemed so proud of me. I will always remember his support and how happy he seemed to be for me. My father passed away a few months later. I was so happy he got to see me get to that point in my life, through college graduation and finally purchasing my own home without anybody’s help.

I love taking people to Reston Town Center when they visit me. There is always a little something for everyone! When my mom visits me, we like to try a different restaurant each time and then walk around the center to do a little shopping. Inevitably we end up stopping at the Pottery Barn where my mom ends up buying new bowls……every time. I don’t think we noticed at first that she suffers from a Reston Town Center Pottery Barn bowl addiction, but gradually it has become a running joke/concern. The truth is, it just makes us both very happy. Whenever I walk around the Town Center for exercise, and I can’t pass the Pottery Barn without thinking of my mom and smiling.
